What is the most epic or crazy or challenging thing you've experienced while training or racing?
My first ever attempt at mountain biking was in Aspen (Spring of 2008) on the Rim Trail - a somewhat advanced trail.  Instead of being discouraged by it, it inspired me to get into the sport.

Planned event for 2010 you're most excited about:  Las Vegas Marathon - Dec 5, 2010 is the targeted qualifier.

What is your favorite event?  Half Marathon - a combination of both speed and endurance.

Favorite route?  Bike ride down to La Perouse Bay, Makena, Maui.  Beautiful setting, hills and ocean by your side.  Tough to beat!

Favorite training workout?  Anything to do with speed.  I have to be on my game and I feel like it makes a difference!

If you could go anywhere you have been before tomorrow where would it be and what would you do?  Let me think about that one!

What is your biggest reason for pursuing your athletics?   With an active work and family life, my athletics is MY time and MY passion that helps me better balance the other two demanding parts of my life.

What is the best thing that has happened to you through your athletics?  I got into running on a dare in 2006 when my best friends wife signed him up for the Phoenix Marathon and he asked me to join him.  We ran the first half of that marathon together and as I look back, it was the most rewarding and pleasurable 13.1 miles I have ever done.

Do you have a person who has been instrumental to your development as an athlete?  In recent months, I have trained with my boss who is 15 years older than me but gives me a serious butt-kicking in swimming, biking and running.  As most people see age as a limiter and a mental block, I use him as a goal for future years.

What is the most epic or crazy or challenging thing you've experienced while training or racing?   A relatively rookie on the bike, I rode from Paia to Hana and back, roughly 80 miles of the most twisty, turny, up and down roads on Maui.

What is the most memorable encounter with wildlife while training or racing?  I have thankfully managed to avoid anything memorable with wildlife!

What accomplishment are you most proud of?  Completing the Ironman 70.3 Hawaii in May, 2009 having had no prior swim or bike experience before starting training.

Is there a race/day, training day, injury, or event that you'd like to forget?  2008 Honolulu Marathon where, after heavy rains during the night, it had started to clear prior to the 5 am start time.  I was focusing so hard on not getting wet before the start but about 15 minutes before the gun went off, in search of the shortest line to a portable toilet, I put my foot in a foot-deep puddle.  Not a good start!

What is your favorite food?   Sushi

What do you eat for breakfast on race day?  Banana and a bagel.

What is your favorite post event food?   Pizza and some rum and coke.

Where is your favorite place to eat?   Flatbread, an organic pizza restaurant in Paia, Maui.

What is your favorite vice?    Ice cream.

Have you read any good books lately you'd like to recommend?  Other than Born to Run that I just finished, I am thoroughly enjoying OPEN, Andre Agassi's autobiography.

Have you seen any good movies you'd like to share?     Just saw Avatar - excellent!

Just returning to the elite field in Xterra and going back to Worlds on Maui. Because of broken ribs and stomach problems, I missed the season and my annual "homecoming" to Hawaii.

What is your favorite event?
Xterra Worlds, Maui.  I race well usually and Hawaii is home to me.  It is a very special place.  While I currently live in WV and call it my second home, I look forward to racing back in Hawaii.

Favorite route?

Anywhere I HAVE been, The Big Island.  Ride and Surf.
Anywhere I HAVE NOT been, India.  Visit the Himalayas, Study Ayurveda in Pune at the University there.

What is your biggest reason for pursuing your athletics?
Sanity.  As long as I don't over do it, athletics keeps me in tune with my mind and body.  I feel strong, healthy and happy.  I learn a lot about my capacity physically and mentally.

What is the best thing that has happened to you through your athletics?
Racing has provided me a lot in very indirect ways.  I have met great people, traveled throughout the states and to France for mtb marathon world champs.  It has provided me a living through my bike and coffee shop and allows me to help others with their fitness goals through years of learning.  Racing has been a springboard for just about everything positive in my life.

Do you have a person who has been instrumental to your development as an athlete? or that you find really inspiring?
Faye Saiki from The Bike Shop Hawaii has been a person I have respected for quite some time.  She provided me employment, inspiration to race as well as open my own shop.  Her business has remained in place for 35+ years through good and bad times.
Also my former coach Jacob Fetty.  He encouraged me to go to France for Marathon World Championships during an extremely difficult personal time in my life.  I probably would not have gone if he had not pushed me and helped me rally some $$.

What is the most epic or crazy or challenging thing you've experienced while training or racing?
WV weather.

What is the most memorable encouter with wildlife while training or racing?
The bear I almost T-boned on my road bike heading down Black Mountain on the Scenic Hwy at 40mph.  We made eye contact.  Thankfully he moved.  He would have won.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Racing and maintaining my business during a very difficult divorce.

Is there a race/day, training day, injury, or event that you'd like to forget?
Being all too optimistic about it, no.  I think everything including bad races and injury happened for a reason and I hope I learned and made the best out of them even if it was a bummer at the time.

What is your favorite food?
Dirtbean SuperCookies.  sushi or any nutbutter, don't make me choose.

What do you eat for breakfast on race day?
SuperCookies

SuperCookies, Sushi and a Pipeline Porter

Cafe Pesto in Hilo
What is your favorite vice?

Have you seen any good movies you'd like to share?
Surfwise
